"I would not enter in my list of friends, (though grac'd with polish'd manners and fine sense yet wanting sensibility), the man who needlessly sets foot upon a worm.
An inadvertent step may crush the snail that crawls at evening in the public path, but he that has humanity, forwarn'd, will tread aside and let the reptile live."
William Cowper (1731-1800)

In the year 2000, a group of civic leaders and social entrepreneurs gathered together for the purpose of giving direction and input for the small press activist club they sought to establish under the Miami Indian name of "Kekionga" (meaning blackberry patch), the original name for their geographical location, where the St. Mary's and the St. Joe Rivers form the Maumee in northeast Indiana.
The consensus of the group was to publish historical, timeless and cultural volumes: to UNLEARN the lessons we have been taught and to REMOUNT first principles, as William Bolingbroke (1678-1751) would have advised.

About Kekionga Press Community Services Dept. (From our Allen County, Indiana, brochure):

"We kicked around ideas about what would be an important thing to do in our area and cannot find a more pressing need than to train  adults and children in violent assault prevention.
We called NOW, the National Crime Prevention Council, and the FBI with little result. The FBI training academy in Quantico, Virginia, for example, told us that they do not have assault prevention training videos for the public.
So we searched police and military suppliers and found the best assault prevention videos in the world. They are yours to borrow to train your employees, students and family members. If studied intensely a few times, they can reduce a person's chance of becoming a violent crime victim, in our opinion, by 80% or more.
To avoid violating copyright law, they cannot be altered, sold, or displayed in a public manner. We share them with you privately".

"It is better to be
   always upon your guard
   than to suffer once."
        Latin Proverb

The Assault Prevention Video Library's main thrust is how to recognize criminal tricks and traps and how to get out of bad situations. Five  universally recognized experts will guide you through the training...What nearly all self-defense courses lack, in our opinion, the "missing link," is training in PREVENTIVE PERCEPTION. When a criminal "interviews" a potential victim, they need to know how not to "pass" it. Controlling fear impulses and displaying solid attitude is an acquired lifesaving skill which you CAN learn.
Because society isn't adequately addressing this vital area of life in an effective and meaningful manner (such as the schools and police departments), we do it ourselves.
Another Community Service  program we started is giving away combo B.A.C. wheels for men and women to estimate their blood-alcohol levels. Few people seem to know how many drinks it takes in an hour to reach the impaired level where driving violations are incurred. Rumors and crazy ideas exist in this area. Because it is so costly to get busted for drunk driving, we feel that accurate measuring devices are needed.
If you are a female and the "guys" encourage you to keep up in their drinking "contests," show them the B.A.C. wheel where it indicates, for example, that two drinks in an hour for a 135 lb. female is equal to 3 drinks in an hour for a 180 lb. male! Equal out the playing field. [Email us at Kekiongavillage@aol.com

for a free combo B.A.C. wheel. Be sure to write B.A.C. wheel in the topic area/ No minimum age is required.]

Creating An Assault Prevention Video Library
for Children

"You grow up, but you take your childhood with you."
Sidney Portier ("One Bright Light," PBS)

Safety N.E.T. Kids--No Easy Targets by Glenn & Amanda Olson.
This Code Amber Organization endorsed video teaches kids from 4-11 how not to go anywhere with strangers; when it is okay to say no to an adult; to report unwanted touches (defined as the private places where a swimsuit covers); how not to fall for abductor's trick lines (such as pleas for help to find a pet or lures such as treats); exercises which aid in escaping abductors  and/or fires; attention-getting tactics at crucial moments; informing parents when changing locations outside; keeping a safe distance from people in vehicles; the safe way to answer phone calls when home alone; checking with parents before answering the door; both wrong and right way enactments in handling situations; use of passwords between parents and children concerning school or event pick-ups...Unlike many other attempts at child safety training videos which come-off like documentaries geared to adults (and which frighten small children), Safety N.E.T. Kids relates to small children via peer pressure and the influence of kids teaching kids. >U.S. & Canadian law enforcement agencies may be able to get a free copy of this video from Code Amber so that they can start a Community Service program to protect the children in their area<
